Chrome beta for Linux and MAC arrives

E-mail Print PDF

Google has officially released version 4.0.249.30 of Chrome for Mac and Linux, the first betas of its Chrome WebKit-based browser for each platform.

"Google Chrome for Linux is finally ready for beta. Like the Windows version, it's fast, secure, stable, simple, extensible, and embraces open standards like HTML5." , writes Google Chrome Blog. Google Chrome works well with both Gnome and KDE, and is updated via the normal system package manager. It has also been developed as a true open source project, using public mailing lists, IRC channels, bug tracker, code repository, and continuous build and test farm -- following in large part the trail blazed by Mozilla.

Google has launched a beta of the Chrome extensions gallery to support the launch, also in beta, of extensions for the Windows and Linux versions of Chrome. Extensions allow users to extend their browser by writing scripts which can become part of the browser experience, in a similar fashion to Firefox Add-Ons. The gallery has more than 300 extensions which users can install from the site with a simple click.

Microsoft got patent of the popular unix command "sudo"  reports many popular websites. ZDnet blogger Adrian writes "It appears that Microsoft has patented sudo, or at least its own version of sudo." He continues "Maybe this is sudo, maybe it’s not, but either way, I can’t see how this is patent-worthy." If it is the actual unix sudo, it is going to make widespread implications in the industry. Think of the situation of Unix user without "sudo".

With Ubuntu 9.10 slated to be released on October 29, Canonical is showing its willingness for Cloud war. Beyond typical updates, there are notable changes around disk encryption, tightened system permissions and cloud service integration.

Last May, Canonical, the company that sponsors Ubuntu, launched a closed beta of a Web storage and synchronization service called Ubuntu One. The service provided 2GB of free online storage space or 10GB of space for $10 a month. The service provided storage synchronization between computers running Ubuntu and a Canonical-run Web service that tapped Amazon's S3 for storage.

Google releases Wave protocol implementation source code

E-mail Print PDF

At the Google I/O conference earlier this year, the search giant revealed an intriguing new communication service called Wave that aims to deliver concurrent messaging and collaborative editing in a single cohesive environment. The underlying Wave Federation Protocol is designed to make it possible for third parties to host their own interoperable Wave instances.

Google intends to open the source code of its own implementation in order to encourage widespread adoption of the protocol. The company took its first major steps in that direction on Friday by releasing the source code of its Operational Transform (OT) code and a simple client/server reference implementation that is built on top of the protocol. This code, which is available under the open source Apache Software License, will give developers a way to start experimenting with the protocol and potentially even building their own Wave-compatible services.
