For newbies its a bad news, since they have to compile new drivers but for free software supporters it a big news. One of the most popular GNU/Linux distribution is coming out with a completely free kernel. For users who are forced to install non-free ones because of the non existence of free ones, Debian will be providing a non-free section. But this comes with lesser support as the source code is not available.

The Debian Project announced last day that the backports project is now an official Debian service available at backports.debian.org. Though dabian is famous for its stability, what it lacked is availability of new softwares in its repository. Since new versions of Debian comes in a slower pace as compared to others, Debian users have to wait long to use the newest version of softwares. So inducting backports to debian official means that users could easily install newest version of softwares.

1) The current Linux source code is always available in both a complete tarball and an incremental patch from the official home of the Linux kernel, http://www.kernel.org. 2) Extract the kernel source to /usr/src/ directory. The kernel tarball is distributed in both GNU zip (gzip) and bzip2 format. Bzip2 is the default and preferred format, as it generally compresses quite a bit better than gzip. The Linux kernel tarball in bzip2 format is named linux-x.y.z.tar.bz2, where x.y.z is the version of that particular release of the kernel source. After downloading the source, uncompressing and untarring it is simple. If your tarball is compressed with bzip2, run # tar -xvjf linux-x.y.z.tar.bz2

Debian was founded in 1993 by Ian Murdock, then a student at Purdue University, who wrote the Debian Manifesto which called for the creation of a Linux distribution to be maintained in an open manner, in the spirit of Linux and GNU. He chose the name by combining the first name of his then-girlfriend (now wife) Debra with his own first name "Ian", forming the portmanteau "Debian", pronounced as debian (deb-e′-en).

Ever wondered why firefox is missing in Debian? Though it is open source, Debian do not think so. Though some Debian distros currently include Mozilla Firefox, they do not typically include the actual Mozilla Firefox logo (the stylized fox on the globe). Debian Linux contains Iceweasel(now known as Icecat) that is derived from Firefox and theoretically should be fully compatible or better. The only difference should be name and logo, as the Firefox name and logo are trademarks.
