For Debian users the only thing they found lacking is its absence of good looks and user friendliness as compared to Ubuntu. This gap is now plugged with the introduction of Debian edition of Linux Mint. Linux Mint was based on Ubuntu Linux distribution, which in turn is based on Debian. It is recognized for user friendliness, eye catching themes, unique start menu, ease of installation particularly for users with no previous experience in Linux. Debian version is available as a DVD for download.LMDE is compatible with repositories designed for Debian Testing or Debian Squeeze.

The development team writes "Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) comes with a Debian base, which we transformed into a live media and on top of which we added a new installer. It’s rougher and in some aspects not as user-friendly as our other editions, it’s very young but it will improve continuously and rapidly, and it brings us one step closer to a situation where we’re fully in control of the system without being impacted by upstream decisions."

Linux Mint started in 2006 with a beta release called 1.0 "Ada".Linux Mint uses primarily free (libre) software, making an exception only for some proprietary hardware drivers, Adobe's Flash plugin and RAR. The current release is Linux Mint 9 "Isadora", released on May 18, 2010. Among Distrowatch readers, Linux Mint has 3 times more users than competing distributions openSUSE and Fedora, 3.8 times more users than Mandriva, yet 3.8 times fewer users than Ubuntu.[Source Wikipedia]
